Work With Fort Collins Public Adjusters
If you're a Fort Collins property owner facing a property damage claim, hiring a Public Adjuster can help protect your finances and keep your claim moving. Whether it's hail-battered shingles, wind damage, a burst pipe, or a wildfire loss, a licensed Fort Collins Public Adjuster can negotiate with your insurer and help you pursue a fair, complete settlement.
Understanding Public Adjusters
A Public Adjuster is a licensed insurance professional who advocates for policyholders, not insurance companies. Colorado law requires Public Adjusters to serve their client's interests alone, with objectivity and loyalty. A Fort Collins Public Adjuster can help you interpret your coverage, file your claim, and pursue a fair settlement from your carrier.
Public Adjusters handle residential and commercial property claims, and can also help with renters' insurance claims. You can bring one on at any stage of the claims process, but engaging a Public Adjuster early lets them document hail and storm damage before repairs or weather cover it up.
How Much Does a Public Adjuster Cost in Colorado?
Public Adjusters typically work on contingency, meaning they're paid a percentage of the settlement they help you recover. Colorado requires the full fee to be spelled out in your written Public Adjuster Contract before any work begins. Outside a declared catastrophe, Colorado doesn't set a fee cap.
When a catastrophic disaster is declared, Colorado caps Public Adjuster fees at 10% of your insurance settlement, and a Public Adjuster can't collect any fee, retainer, or deposit before your claim is settled. Your contract also can't let your adjuster collect a percentage of money your insurer owes but hasn't paid, or take the entire fee out of the first check.
Your Rights Under Colorado Law
Colorado sets clear rules to protect homeowners who hire a Public Adjuster. Before you sign, your adjuster must give you a separate written disclosure explaining the different types of adjusters and your rights.
- 72 hours to change your mind: You can rescind a Public Adjuster Contract within 72 hours of signing it by mailing a written rescission, postage prepaid, addressed to both your insurer and your Public Adjuster.
- No repair conflicts: A Colorado Public Adjuster can't take part in repairing your property, and can't steer you to a contractor they profit from.
- You pick your contractor: No contract can give a Public Adjuster the power to choose who does your repair work.
- You approve the settlement: A Public Adjuster can't agree to any settlement without your knowledge and consent.
Are Fort Collins Public Adjusters Licensed?
Yes. Public Adjusters must be licensed by the Colorado Division of Insurance, and public adjusting companies need a business entity license too. Every Colorado Public Adjuster must also carry a surety bond of at least $20,000 that protects consumers from errors, fraud, and unfair practices. You can verify a Fort Collins Public Adjuster's license through the Colorado Division of Insurance.
